A segment is a group of customers who meet certain conditions (for example, those who bought in the last 30 days or those who left a phone number). Campaigns are sent to these segments, so building one is the starting point.
- In your Shopify admin, open the Customers section.
- Open Segments and choose to create a new segment.
- Define the conditions that group the customers you want to reach (for example, that they have a phone number, or bought a specific product).
- Give the segment a clear name and save it.
Segments live in Shopify, which owns the customer data. Dondy reads and syncs that data, so once you save a segment in Shopify, it becomes available to use when you create a campaign in Dondy.
By default the segment includes anyone with a phone number. You can tighten this to require explicit opt-in, aligned with your email or SMS consent rules. It's best to be transparent about WhatsApp marketing wherever you collect the number (a checkout box, a sign-up pop-up).
In Dondy, in the Settings area, under the Unsubscribe section, you can choose, based on the consent a customer has given whether or not they receive communications.
You can also use the "Exclude customers who received marketing messages recently" option at the bottom of every campaign you design to prevent messages from being sent to customers who have already received them recently, thereby maintaining a healthy environment on Meta.
