What Is the WhatsApp Business Platform (API)?

There are two different ways to use WhatsApp for business, and it helps to know the difference:
- The WhatsApp Business app is the free app you'd download on your phone built for one person, sending messages manually, one at a time.
- The WhatsApp Business Platform (sometimes called the WhatsApp API) is Meta's official system for businesses to send messages automatically and at scale — things like automated flows, bulk campaigns, and an AI agent replying around the clock. This is what Dondy connects to so it can send and manage messages on your behalf.
Think of it as the difference between texting customers yourself versus having a proper system do it for you, reliably and at volume.
When Is It Required?
You need to be connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform if you want to:
- Send automations — abandoned cart reminders, order confirmations, upsells, welcome messages, review requests
- Send campaigns — bulk marketing messages to a group of customers at once
- Use the AI agent to auto-reply to customers
- Give your team a shared inbox with multiple seats
If you're only sending occasional messages yourself, one at a time, you don't need it.
Which Plans Need It?
- Free & Pro — no Platform connection needed. You message customers manually from your own WhatsApp number.
- Power Automation & Elite — a Platform connection is required. This is what powers your automations, campaigns, team inbox, and AI agent.
